The World Health Organization (WHO) sponsored the FIrst International Conference on Uncaria Tomentosa in Geneva (Switzerland). In it there was unanimity that, after the discovery of quinine, no other plant of the Andes and the Amazon could garner so much interest as Uncaria Tomentosa had. Interest had developed mostly on its alkaloids. At least six of which were shown to raise immune response up to 50%. Five of the alkaloids had been documented as having effects against leukemia, tumors, ulcers, infections and arthritis.

The First Italo-Peruvian Congress of Traditional Andean Medicine, in 1992, was attended by Peruvian, Italian and German researchers. In it, Dr Livia Bianchi, researcher with the Institute of General Pathology of the University of Pavia, brought her conclusion that the compounds in Uncaria Tomentosa fought the presence of free-radicals, which explained its efficient anti-inflammatory, anti-tumoral and anti-mutational properties.

A study by Drs Cosimo Piazza, Luciana Riva and Francesco de Simone of the Institute for the Cure of Tumors in Salerno (Italy), pointed that Uncaria Tomentosa inhibits the proliferation of breast cancer cells up to 90%. This study was done in vitro with MCF7 cells, used widely in this type of cancer research.
